Setting poker goals

Setting your own goals when playing poker either online, in a casino, or with your friends is increasingly important for your overall success. Whether you aspire to one day be a part of the main event for the World Series of Poker or simply want to make a few dollars here and there, creating and pushing towards your goals is one of the best ways to improve as a player.setting poker goals

So start today by writing down your poker goals and building a plan that can help you meet them. Here’s how

What do you want to do?

The first part of setting your poker goals is to brainstorm and think of what it is that you want to accomplish. For argument’s sake, let us say that your goal is to make $10,000 in a year playing online poker. Write the goal down, post it somewhere, and think about it all the time.

How will you do it?

The next thing you need to do is devise a plan that will help you accomplish your goals. Maybe you will commit to playing 3 hours of online poker a day or spending 2 hours reading up on advanced poker strategy on weekends. The more you plan the ‘how’ when it comes to your goals, the easier it will be to motivate yourself and push yourself in the right direction.

Creating a Training Schedule

No matter what your long term goals are in terms of poker, you are going to need to train, study, and play in order to continue to improve. Schedule in time to read poker books, look up advice from the poker masters (for example read basic heads up strategy), and set aside set periods of time that you will practice and implement any new tricks or strategy you have learned. By getting into a routine and making time you will find it much easier to reach your end destination.

Keep Track of your Results

Purchase a notebook or a day planner and keep track of your schedule and all of the work that you are putting in. Don’t forget about bankroll management. By taking note of your winning percentage, the strategies used to win certain games, and which methods work best, you will be simultaneously working to meet your aim. On the other hand, you will notice negative results and teach yourself to alter your expectations or switch up your strategies.

Online poker is a game that relies on patience and critical thinking. The more committed you are to improving, the better of a player you will be down the road. That is why it is so important to create goals, work towards them, and take note of all of your progress. You can be a successful poker player and all of the resources you need are already scattered around you.

It is just time for you to start being driven, become determined to improve, and be passionate about your love for poker and your goals. Put your mind to it and you could be the next big player in the world of poker. Also check out what mistakes other poker players are doing so that you can learn of them.

Top poker tells for online poker

Tells are one of the most important parts of improving your poker play, even when you are playing online and cannot actually see the person you are playing against. The better you are at noticing tells and taking advantage of a way certain players play, the more successful you will be and the more money you will be able to make.

Isn’t online supremacy what we are all aiming for when it comes to poker?

Here are some other top tips that you can use to keep in touch with the game around you and discover certain insight into how others may be playing.
top poker tells

Continually Recreate Each Hand

If you jot down notes throughout the game in terms of how certain players are playing and how hands ended, then you will be much better prepared to make a prediction in terms of what may be coming next. Following along during the current hand at all times can also give you an idea of what strategies your competition is using. Knowing who checked, who raised, and who re-raised gives you the upper hand in determining which players have the better hands.

Reading a Quick Check

When a player pulls a quick check and then follows it with an instant call, it is almost always a sign that they are waiting for a draw. They may also be relying on one more card in order to complete a flush, and you can take advantage of that. Watch for the card that would give them a flush, and if it doesn’t come up be ready to make them pay. If you notice another card of the same suit falls, or something comes that can complete a draw, be ready to check and cut your losses.

Reading Betting Amounts

If you are doing a good job of keeping note of all the action, then betting amounts will be a big part of reading your opponents. Amateur players will consistently bet heavy when they are bluffing and bet small when they are trying to hide a strong hand. Use this to your advantage whenever you can. However, other players may do the opposite and bet strong with big hands, so be sure you pay attention each hand and figure out the preferred strategy used most commonly by your opponents.

Check-raises are also a strong indication that someone has a very big hand and is trying to make the most of it.

Reading Time

One of the most common ways you can find tells during online poker is how long it takes for players to make decisions. If someone is checking quickly they can often be bet out of a hand easily.

Other times you may notice that someone hits a big hand and then pauses quite some time before checking, only to bet big on their next turn. If you notice an important card come up and notice someone taking extra time to check, then you can be pretty sure that they hit something. If they had missed the flop then they would have been quick to check and try to get out.

With practice and repetition you can take advantage of all of these tells, but remember that they are just guidelines. Every poker player is different so just keep your eye on routine and certain strategies your opponents use a lot and you should be ready to exploit them to the fullest.

Top 8 biggest mistakes in online poker

biggest mistakes in online poker
One of the most important factors in online poker is to watch your opponents carefully and try to read their strategy. Remember that the source of your money are the opponent’s mistakes. There are many ways through which you can take advantage of these errors. Often there will be errors that you make and therefor other player will benefit from your mistakes. You can also take a look at our article: Poker for beginners .

Below you will find the top mistakes that many players do when starting to play poker online:

1. Choose the right poker site:

The most important aspect in order to become a winning poker player is to choose the best poker site for you. The biggest poker site is not always the best for you. It all depends on what type of player you are or what country you live in (check out US accepted poker sites ).

2. Playing more hands when blinds are low

It is a common mistake to play more hands at the beginning of a tournament when the blinds are low. Even if the blind isn’t high you should sfold your weak hands. Those little blinds you loose will add up and at the end of the game every chip counts.

3. Playing multi way pots with weak hands

Playing multi-way pots has it’s risks. The more players are involved in the pot the more chips you can win but the less chance you have to get those chips. This is recommended only with strong hands. You sholud always fold weak hands in these situations.

4. Not adjusting raising and calling ranges

Correct adjusting of raisin and calling ranges is also very important.

5. Bad play on the blinds (defend bb)

Another common mistake is when a player defends his big blind. For example: you are on the big blind with a weak hand. Everybody folds and one player raises. In this situation it can be possible that the raise is a bluff but it is recommended to always fold here.

6. Bad buble play (all in fold ranges)

You should know when to go all in. It is not worth limping in and calling with random hands. When you have a very low stack of chips you have two options: All in or Fold.

7. Trap hands

Beware of trap hands. Hands like QQ are often overrated. Sure you will win some monster pots with this hand but on the other hand you will often loose against bigger hands. Mistakes are present mostly in the prefold action.

8. Play at the right stakes

Players often move up stakes too early. Moving up stakes means that you have the chance to make more money in less time but if you do it too early it will mean that you will loose you whole bankroll in a matter of minutes.

Bankroll management poker chart

If you are playing poker to make some cash it is important that you have a good bankroll management. Bankroll management is the decision you make when entering a poker game; you decide how much of your bankroll you will risk in that game. In the history of poker there are many examples of good players going broke because of bad management.

If you are a causal player then this article isn’t for you. Causal players can play at all stakes regardless of their poker skills.

It is normal to lose a few games. Of course you can’t win each time. You should know the natural game variance: Good poker players lose 20 buyins after 500 games. This can be less and more but 20 is the average.
Following guidelines are recommended:

Always have 50 to 100 buyins left

This means that if you have a bankroll of $50 than you should play $1 max SNG games/tournaments (50/50=1). If you have a bankroll of $250 you should play $5 max SNG/tournaments (250/50 = $5). This way you make sure that you can handle the ocassional downswings.

Move up or down a level

Be disciplined. Moving a level down doesn’t mean that you are a bad player, it means that you make the necessary changes in order to become a better winning player on the long run. When you make enough cash you can move up one level (only one). Moving up levels takes it’s time but it is worth it.

For example: If you are playing $1 SNGs and you have a bankroll of $150 you can move up to $3 SNGs (150/50= $3).
If you are playing poker for a living you can play even more conservatively.

Game type
Weak management
Average management
Pro management
SNG games 15 buyins 25 buyins 50+ buyins
NL cash games 15 buyins 20 buyins 30+ buyins
Multi-table Tournaments 60 buyins 80 buyins 100+ buyins

Online poker players can find a large range of games here, including all sorts of tournaments, ring games, and options that suit any experience level. No matter when you are looking to play, or what kinds of poker games you are looking for, you are sure to find it at Party Poker.

One of the reasons that Party Poker stands out among the crowd is the fact that they offer their poker software downloads for Linux users, Mac users, and PC users. The abundance of soft games, loyalty rewards, and other promotions make Party Poker a very popular place to play. There seem to be special events each and every day and there is even a very well run referral program that can pay out rather well.

Traffic

It was not that long ago when Party Poker had the most traffic within the entire online poker world. The site’s traffic used to peak at 18,000 ring players and 95,000 tournament players. However, since new US regulations took place, the site now boasts 9,000 ring players and 60,000 tournament players. The change in traffic has forced the sit to introduce rather high rakes on both ring games and in tournaments.

Software

In years past Party Poker was recognized as falling behind when it came to software and graphics, but that is no longer the case. There have been a number of recent enhancements that allow you to resize tables, filter game lists, hide or show different elements, and enjoy the lobby much more. While the interface is not necessarily the cleanest within the online poker world usability and playability are excellent overall.

There is a wide range of poker games that can be played at Party Poker from 7 card stud to Texas Holdem, but there are a few components that are definitely missing including heads up matches.

Party Poker all started back in 2001 as has continued to grow and improve steadily since then. Close to 9 years later the online poker room has become one of the biggest and best available thanks to their array of promotions and play options.
Find out what all the fuss is about and head to the party at Party Poker today.
